Drip, Sprinkler, and Micro Zones: Designing Water Around Planting

A villa garden in Dubai is rarely one thing. The lawn drinks differently from the date palms, and a row of bougainvillea on a south wall drinks differently again. We zone the system by planting type and microclimate, not by what fits on a single timer channel, so each area gets the right method: subsurface drip for hedges and beds, low-flow sprays for grass, point emitters for trees, and micro-spray for newly planted material.

Each zone is wired back to a controller channel that the KNX layer can address. That means the same scene that runs Morning lighting can also open a perimeter drip line for ten minutes; it also means we can tune one zone without touching the rest of the schedule. The result is less water per zone and far fewer dry patches.

Weather-Based Watering: Skip Cycles When the Forecast Says So

The controller pulls hourly forecast and evapotranspiration data for your location and adjusts before the cycle runs. If rain is expected within the next 24 hours, the cycle is skipped or shortened; if a sandstorm or high-wind warning is active, sprinkler zones are paused to stop water blowing off-target.

In our experience the biggest water saving in a Dubai villa is not from clever zoning, it is from not watering on the few days a year it actually rains, and from scaling down through the milder winter weeks instead of running summer schedules year-round.

Soil Moisture Sensors: Water on Evidence, Not on a Timer

Timers assume the soil behaves the same way every day. It does not. We install buried soil moisture probes in representative zones (typically lawn, bed, and tree pit) and let those readings veto a scheduled cycle when the root zone is already saturated.

On compacted villa soil this also prevents runoff: when the sensor reports the upper profile is full, the cycle splits into shorter pulses with soak time between them, so water actually reaches the roots instead of running into the driveway.

Brands and Controllers We Specify

We work with the irrigation manufacturers that are properly supported in Dubai. Hunter is our default for villa and estate work (Hydrawise for cloud, HCC for larger sites); Rain Bird (ESP-LXIVM, ESP-TM2) is the alternative on properties that already have Rain Bird valves; Gardena smart controllers handle simple retrofits where the owner wants a one-day install with no rewiring.

All three are bridged into KNX through a gateway or our automation server, so schedules, runtimes, and zone status appear on Haus Logic's custom dashboard next to lighting and climate. You do not end up with a separate app per brand.

Soil moisture, flow, and rain sensors are matched to whichever controller we specify, but the data path always lands in the same dashboard.

One Dashboard for Garden, Pool, and Villa

Irrigation is treated as one more subsystem on Haus Logic's custom dashboard, alongside lighting, climate, CCTV, pool plant, and energy. You see current zone state, next scheduled cycle, last 30 days of water use by zone, and any active alerts on the same screen.

Leak alerts (zone running with no expected flow, or master flow exceeding the sum of open zones) and valve faults are pushed to the dashboard and to WhatsApp, so a stuck solenoid in August does not become a discovery at the next DEWA bill.

Retrofit vs New Landscape

Most Dubai villa gardens already have pipework, valves, and a basic controller from the landscaper. In an occupied villa we typically keep the pipework, swap the controller for a Hunter or Rain Bird unit, add a flow meter at the master line and soil sensors in two or three representative zones, and bridge everything into KNX. Install is usually one to two days, the garden keeps running, and the owner sees the new dashboard the same week.
